The basis of Bulgarian folk holidays and customs is the folk worldview. Holidays and customs in the past were used for a good harvest, health of domestic animals and well-being in the family. They are arranged in a calendar sequence, with the first spring holiday being Baba Marta Day or Grandmother March Day.
On March 1, it is customary for Bulgarians to exchange red-and-white woven yarn bracelets, otherwise known as Martenitsi. Those bracelets are worn throughout the month until the person wearing it sees a stork or a blooming tree. Then the Martenitsa is tied to the tree to welcome spring – and Baba Marta, or ‘Grandmother March’. It is said those bracelets will bring good health and luck to the person wearing them.
Do you want to make a Martenitsi bracelet?
Come celebrate Baba Marta Day on Tuesday the 19th of March from 12:30 - 13:45 💚
