What is addiction?
Addiction is defined in the DSM-5 and it is generally accepted that sigarettes, heroin, and crack are addictive but what about gambling, running or overeating?
When and how does pleasure turn into compulsive behavior and/or addiction? And what is happening in the brain? The mesolimbic dopaminergic reward system plays a role in the development of addiction but is it the only system involved?
These are the topics in the lecture by Anton Scheurink, professor in neuroendocrinology at the University of Groningen.
The first part of his presentation will focus on the neurobiological and behavioral factors involved in the development of addiction, the second part will particularly focus on the question whether eating disorders such as compulsive overeating and Anorexia Nervosa should be considered as an addiction.
This opening lecture will be €2,- for regular visitors (free for members of SPS-NIP!) and there will be some snacks and drinks to accompany your time here!
