An exciting initiative which is responsible for five preschools in Grabouw, one in Strand and one in Stellenbosch area. It aims to contribute to meeting a critical community need – providing essential Early Childhood Development (ECD) centres for children (aged 3-6) who would otherwise not receive adequate foundation essentials in education. Providing a nurturing, caring and safe environment for children to survive, be physically healthy, mentally alert, emotionally secure, and socially competent and be able to learn.

Project duration: Ongoing
Minimum length of stay: 2 weeks, but preferably longer
Starting period: Flexible

Project information
Project description
The Early Childhood Development preschools focus on children from the most disadvantaged communities where children often come to school on empty stomachs. All schools have ownership which is shared with the community (they named the school and are in the board) to create more commitment and security in the area. They are provided with meals and get educated tri-lingual Afrikaans, English and Xhosa during their schooldays from 8.00 till 14.00 from Monday till Friday. In some cases the preschools have Grad R (age 5-6) just before the children are going to primary school.
- Grabouw: 5 Preschools in disadvantaged areas in Grabouw communities
- Strand: catering for the local community; providing an opportunity for children to receive a solid educational foundation
- Preschool in Stellenbosch: serves mostly children of farmworkers in the Valley community of Stellenbosch. Providing quality preschool education to children who would, for the most part, have nowhere else to go while their parents are away at work.
Goal: Aiming for skills transfer next to leaving behind materials and methods that can be used in terms of sustainability within the education and wellbeing of young children.
